The Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) is considered to be the most viable long-term alternative to ease the chronic water shortage situation within the Kathmandu Valley. The Project is designed to divert about 170 MLD of fresh water to Kathmandu Valley from the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchowk district. Augmenting this supply by adding about a further 170 MLD each from the Yangri and Larke rivers, which lie in the upstream proximity of Melamchi are also being investigated as future supply sources. Wencai Zhang, the vice president of Asian Development Bank (ADB), has said that Melamchi water will reach Kathmandu by April or May next year. Zhang, who is on a four-day visit to Nepal, said that they were optimistic about completing all the physical works in the new deadline. The statement has come at a time when the project has become uncertain after missing the mid-April 2016 deadline. Government officials are also hopeful of the project meeting its new deadline as the Italian contractor for tunnel works, Cooperativa Muratori e Cementisti di Ravenna (CMC), has accelerated tunnel digging works in March. But they say the contract must accelerate its work further if it is to meet the new deadline. Zhang concluded that the project will be completed by May next year after holding discussion with the management of civil contractor, consultant and officials of Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP). He also visited the project site in Sindhupalchowk district.
